DÉMÉNAGER (to move out)

Déménager means to leave our current place of residence, to move from our place of residence to another. 
 

We live somewhere, but we decide to leave for a reason that belongs to us. Moving means leaving, leaving your home permanently with your business.
 

Example : J'ai aidé mon frère à déménager la semaine dernière. (=I helped my brother move out last week.)
 

My brother left his apartment, he left where he lived.
 

 

 

EMMÉNAGER (to move in)

Emménager means to settle in a new dwelling, to arrive in a new dwelling.
 

When je déménage, I move out of my old place. When j'emménage, I move into a new place.
 

Obviously, one goes with the other. When je déménage, I usually emménage a new place.
 

Example : Elle va bientôt emménager dans le quartier.
 

She will soon be living in the neighborhood, in a new home.
 

 

 

AMÉNAGER (to arrange)

Aménager means to prepare, organize and dispose of one’s dwelling for a specific purpose. Often, when you aménage a home, you will transform it, perhaps decorate it or move the furniture.
 

There are several reasons why you can aménage, to have more space, to have a nicer or more pleasant or practical space.
 

Example : J'ai aménagé ma maison pour accueillir notre nouveau chien.
 

I may have arranged my furniture to have more space in the house or to make the rooms more accessible for the dog.

I’ll give you mnemonic tricks to differentiate DÉMÉNAGER, EMMÉNAGER and AMÉNAGER.
 

Déménager start with DÉ like DÉPART (=departure). When je déménage, there is a departure (départ). I leave my home.
 

Emménager start with the sound EN like ENTRER (=enter). When j’emménage, I enter a new place, a new dwelling.
 

Aménager start with A like ARRANGER. When j’aménage, I arrange the space for a specific purpose.
