There's a huge difference between these two presentations, isn't there? And yes, my first presentation was slow and I pronounced every syllable correctly. It's kind of like what you hear in the audios of not-modern French textbooks. Let's just say I was in "French from textbook" mode.

My second presentation was authentic and natural, it's my everyday way of speaking. And here I was in "Authentic French" mode.

I'm sure you've been in this situation before. You learned French from a French textbook in school, maybe a little outdated with non-authentic content. And then, big surprise when you arrive in France or just watch a French series, it's not the same French you heard. There is a big problem. Total panic. 

But, I am here to help you better understand authentic French and also to speak it. That's what we're going to do today in this new lesson. 

I'm going to talk about my hobbies, what I like to do when I have free time. There will be two versions, the first one we will call "French from textbook" where I will speak in a slower way, more understandable it's true, but not natural, not authentic. 

And, there will be a second version called "Authentic French" where I will speak in a natural and authentic way. I will speak normally. 

You will then see the difference between these two ways of speaking, and it will help you to better understand authentic French.

Then, we will compare the two ways of speaking, and we will see in detail how to go from an unnatural French to an authentic French. 

So, I'm going to start talking about my hobbies in "French from Textbook". I will speak more slowly, pronounce every syllable and use no speech tic. It will be much easier for you to understand, but I remind you that the French don't speak this way. We'll see the same speech later, but in authentic French.

Ok, so now it's time to compare authentic and less authentic French in more detail. Obviously, I'm talking about intonation and pronunciation. Sometimes, between the "French from textbook" and the "Authentic French" we also have differences in vocabulary and grammar, but we won't see that today. We will focus on pronunciation.

Quels sont mes loisirs ? Qu’est-ce que j’aime faire pendant mon temps libre ? VS Quels sont mes loisirs ? Qu’est-c’que j’aime faire pendant mon temps libre ? Hummm 

Qu'est-ce que : KÈ-SE KE 

VS 

Qu'est-c'que : KÈ-SSKE

When speaking, we are more likely to say “Qu’est-c’que” rather than “Qu’est-ce que”.

Attention, in writing, we will always write "What is it". Here, I change the writing to indicate the change of pronunciation.
 

In Authentic French, we also have a language tic "Hummm". The "Hummm" indicates that you are thinking. If you are searching for words, use this tic to show that you are thinking. Be careful not to overuse it either.

Je n’ai pas énormément de temps libre = JE N’È PAS

You may already know this, but when speaking, there is a tendency to delete the negation "ne".
 

When speaking, there is also a tendency to delete "e".

Like :

Je consacre JE - KON - SSA - KR

VS 

J’consacre : JKON - SSA - KR
 

beaucoup de temps à mon travail : BO-KOU DE TÃ

VS 

beaucoup d’temps à mon travail : BO-KOU DTÃ

You can hardly hear the "D".

 

Mais, quand, j’ai du temps libre, ce que je préfère, c'est dessiner. J’aime dessiner, ça me détend. VS Mais, quand, j’ai du temps libre, c’que j’préfère, c'est dessiner. J’aime dessiner, ça’m’détend.

Here again, we have a suppression of the "e" sound and we will pronounce two words in one.

Ce que je préfère : CE KE JE PRÉ-FÈR

C’que j’préfère : SKE JPRÉ-FÈR
 

Ça me détend : SA ME DÉ-TÃ

Ça’m’détend : SAM DÉ-TÃ
